The Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa Resort

Posted in Travel Writing, Indian Ocean, Mauritius by Dawn Letham on 1st Jun 2024

After much deliberation on where to visit for my special birthday, my husband and I decided on the beautiful island of Mauritius with its breathtaking sunsets, amazing food and stunning beaches. I couldn't wait.

After a smooth check-in at Emirates and a very slick boarding process, we left the grey skies of Manchester behind. Having pre-booked our seats we enjoyed the peace of the upper deck, something I would highly recommend pre-booking. After a very smooth connection in Dubai, we arrived in Mauritius to be promptly greeted by our private transfer.

The first thing we noticed was how green and lush the island was, and on route to our hotel, our driver pointed out places of interest, which was so informative we felt like we were on a private tour. Approximately an hour later, we arrived at our final destination, The Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa and were greeted by the most beautiful Banyan Tree at the front of the hotel, which in the evening is all beautifully lit up.

The sound of a gong sent staff scurrying out to greet us and collect our luggage, and as we walked into the hotel lobby, we were amazed by the most stunning view of the Indian Ocean, swaying palm trees and a gorgeous beach. It was everything I had imagined it to be and more. The hotel itself was so light and airy and we were quickly escorted to some seats and offered a refreshing cocktail, whilst a staff member went through the layout of the hotel.

We had booked a Turtle Bay Junior Suite which was a huge room, with an amazing sea view and close to all the restaurants and the main pool (the 2nd largest on the island!). A lovely touch was a beach basket you could use during your stay. We had pre-booked some of the restaurants and I would recommend you do this too. With five restaurants on offer, one being the main buffet restaurant (Seasonal Tastes), we tried them all. Our favourites were Kangan and the Beach Grill, along with Seventh Heaven, a very romantic meal my husband surprised me with on the beach!

During our stay, we visited the village of Grand Baie, in the north of the island. With beautiful sandy beaches, and little sailboats dotted around, we visited the Grand Bazaar where locals sell their handicrafts, and had lunch in one of the many little restaurants. We found a little beach hut on the beach, enjoyed a drink, and just watched the world go by. Perfect!

We had the absolute best time in Mauritius, it was such a special holiday where we made some lifelong memories. The Seventh Heaven meal on the beach was a real highlight and very special, and I would recommend it. The customer service at the Westin Turtle Bay far exceeded my expectations, nothing was too much trouble. Mauritius is a very special place, that stole a piece of my heart.
